Summer is a great time for USA visitors & tourists to plan a road vacation. You may be taking a short weekend trip or an entire month off. To be safe and comfortable you must follow some basic tips.

1. It is important to have the manufacturer recommended tire pressure in your tires. You can find the recommended amount in the doorjamb on the driver’s side. Correct tire pressure ensures proper contact between the tire and the road. Tires loose air pressure every month, so check them often. It is also the easiest way to improve your car’s fuel economy.

2. Schedule an oil change before your trip. Warm weather may require thicker oil. Pay attention to the coolant/antifreeze ratio, it should be around 50/50.

3. Make sure the belts and hoses are in a good condition, and all the fluids are topped off. Batteries usually have a life span of 3 to 5 years. It is a good idea to have the battery tested because extreme weather can put a strain on an older battery.

4. Auto Club membership can help you in an emergency. Carry the card on your trip so you have access to them when needed. Your car may also be covered under a manufacturer’s plan during roadside emergencies.

5. Always have an emergency kit in your truck. The kit can contain basic tools, food, water, jumper cables, first aid kit and a flashlight. Auto stores sell fully assembled kits.

6. Carry drinks and food in a cooler that can be easily accessed. Make sure it is always full, refilling it along the way. Overly salty snacks and sugary sodas can make you dehydrated.

7. Drive safely and observe all the rules. Take a break if you are sleepy or tired. Seat belts can save your life. Fasten seatbelts and use car seats for your children.

Make sure your medical insurance travels with you. Have a great summer!
